Everything You'd Feared Was True In Friends...
Most likely isn't. (Forgive me folks, but by virtue of the last article, this is the
only tv show that I'm assuming is common ground). Where to begin? Well, how
'bout the obvious: AMERICANS AREN'T ALL WHITE!! You'd think whomever
designs these shows would've gotten the point by now, but go figure. This is
an issue that could be dwelled on, but I'm going to assume we are aware of
the salient points of this argument and move on.
On the other hand, all Americans, even bad waitresses and largely
unemployed caterers can afford monstrously spacious apartments. Really!?
No. America may be physically larger than the UK, but the fundamentals of
cities remain the same: large numbers of people are trying to live very, very
close to the central location.
Space is always at a premium, especially on an island like Manhattan. My
personal experience (which is limited to Boston) includes living in a studio
apartment only slightly larger
than the kitchen in Chandler and Joeys apartment, at the cost of $750 a
month.
When my fiancee heard I was be including this segment, her first comment
was "Nobody's as stupid as Ross". This is probably true, too.
