Contents Sex? Drugs? 'The GM Rolls...'

You can always tell when a GM is adlibbing. As well as the obvious slight stuttering that has replaced the almost robotic previous sentences, he has now developed the tendency to roll dice for no apparent reason and, although never looking up from it, you notice he hasn't turned the page of his notebook for ages.

Some quick-thinking GMs would be able to quietly push the PCs back into the plot, but most will just um and er until the PCs get bored of "...er..you see nothing interesting" replies, and give up using their recovered 'Magic Net of Death' to hunt Giant Bats.

The GM may also panic, big style. Confused that his usually obedient pet PCs have decided to spend all day carving their initials in the 'Forest of Certain Death', the GM may lash out, and hope that the sudden appearance of "...13 Grizzly bears, and their Troll owner..." will scare them back onto the script. Of course, the combination of this, and the odd 'modified' -to hit- roll, will certainly make the PCs regret that they turned most of the area signposts to point the opposite way, but it is certainly the action of an unsettled GM.
